RailFreight timetabling

I am about to start a project looking at RailFreight in a Civil Engineering context.

Basically, is there any website where you can view where freight trains run, ie times origin/destination and route? Trying to identify low/high flows..

I am not familiar with doing this sort of thing or looking at the online timetabling websites so any help would be appreciated.

Look at OpenTrainTimes - freight is listed with the headcode "FRGT".

Freightmaster or Open Train Times are good places to start. OTT shows paths, not trains which definitely run.

In general, or specific routes?

In general, the busiest freight routes are:

- the WCML from London to Carlisle

- Southampton to Birmingham

- Felixstowe to Birmingham/London

- 'cross country' (Birmingham to Teesside)

- South Wales

- Immingham to Scunthorpe and the Aire Valley power stations.

- Reading to London


Other routes (such as the Midland Main Line, GWML west of Didcot,
Settle and Carlisle, ECML from Peterborough to Doncaster, etc) are
not as busy, but still strategically important.

It is a bit out of date, but there are some maps in the Freight RUS that give you a good idea of what the busiest freight corridors are.

Look at OpenTrainTimes - freight is listed with the headcode "FRGT".

And you can find some of the missing information by crossreferencing with the WTT. Freight is listed in books CY (LNW south and Midland), CZ (LNW north), GF (Scotland), LD (Anglia), PF (Western), WK (Southern) and YH (LNE).

Again, it's just paths rather than services that run. (But you can see some of which services are currently running by looking at Realtime Trains).
