'Railforums.co.uk is not responding'

With annoying frequency, when I am logged into these forums I get a freeze frame, then after about a minute a box appears at the bottom of the screen saying 'railforums.co.uk is not responding'.

This only happens when I am logged into these forums (I've never had this problem when using the WNXX forum).

Any ideas what causes this ?

What operating system and browser are you using?

Sounds like an outdated browser. The forum will be designed to run on a certain browser or newer. This is dependent on the web design and varies.
I have found certain websites do this on my work computer as the work IE browser is an older browser and a growing number of sites are designed for newer versions. My employer cant update the version due to their license being for the older version

Could they get Firefox or Chrome?

As an aside, I tend to avoid IE anyway because being built into the Windows OS, it is more vulnerable.

IE 11 seems to work fine with Windows 7.

He means more open to attacks and malicious software and stuff as its MS that the hackers generally target due to it being the most used OS

Yeah, I love the old "Macs never get viruses"... I recently helped a friend who had contracted malware very easily!

If you don't have adblock, you also have the problem that any of the third-party adverts on RUK could have funky Javascript or just be slow at returning HTTP responses that can cause a 'not responding' message

Though seeing as the forum relies on, what we hope are fairly unobtrusive, adverts to support its costs we'd hope that most people with adblock have us whitelisted

Have no fear. There are still a considerable number of RailUK members who are fully aware of the advantage to the website of small advertisements and who will just ignore them if they have no interest in them.

Some advertisements still target me in the mistaken hope that I did not really retire four years and am still holding a position of power of ancillary purchasing at the consultancy in addition to my role of Senior Head of Projects.

Are you able to tell from your website analytics exactly how many visitors to the site are using Adblock, Ghostery and other blocking add-ons?

I think mine have gotten stuck. I haven't seen anything but an advert for a 16-25 railcard on here for about a week - which, as you can imagine, is a little futile on here!

Exactly. Adverts about transport or railway related products might seem sensible to the advertisers given the content of this site... But they're not likely to advertise anything we don't already know all about!
