My card expired a week into the Covid shutdown so I delayed renewing until now - but what did folk think of the refusal to offer an extension to cards that clearly could not have been used?

At the time I thought it was disgraceful; but with hindsight and knowledge of the enormous costs of the pandemic I would put a far higher value on the freedoms that people lost than the value of any railcard.

This was a Government decision. As I understand it RDG wanted railcard validities to be extended but were told ‘no’ by the Government.

For a party that keeps banging on about ‘fairness’ it does seem an illogical decision. Hopefully they’ll reap what they sow at the next election of substance!

When you buy a new physical railcard online the start date is usually about 10 days after the date of purchase, to allow time for it to reach you in the post. So, if you buy in a few days the start date will be around the 20th anyway.
I didnt find that when renewing my friends and family railcard.

1. it was online.
2, it was a renewal
3, the renewal was of one that was also bought online from the same account, with a prompt to renew it.
4, it was bought within 21 days of expiration.

it arrived a week later, and was dated the day it was posted, giving me an overlapping period with 2 cards valid for / thus losing 12 days of my renewal

(and yes I have the old card and new card, and the online account transaction on railcard.co.uk to back that up which also shows this).

I didn't say anything about renewals.
