Ok, my current railcard expires on 7th April 2013. Earlier this week I sent off for a new railcard by mail using £14 of Tesco Rewards to purchase it. The new one arrived in the post today, and instead of it starting off where my old one ended (8th April) it says on it "valid until 14 APR 2014". Now assuming that these railcards are valid for exactly one year what do I do about travelling on the 13 APR 2013 which is a journey I do actually need it for. Why have they left a gap in the validity dates like this?

Just use it?! I'd be totally amazed if anyone even cared from our point of view.

If it says valid until the 14th, but nowhere on it when it is valid from, I assume it is entirely fine for you to use it on the 13th.

Railcard renewals online tend to give you a week or so in addition to the 12 months, and yes you can start using it straight away.
