Railcard name verification

This week I was travelling on EMR and after my ticket and railcard were scanned by the ticket inspector, I was asked to confirm my name.
Had this happened to anyone before? Never had an issue before but seemed odd. What would the reason for this be?

Today I showed my Railcard-discounted ticket and Railcard to an SWR guard and he accepted it without asking any questions. Later, however, I asked the same guard if he would sell me a Railcard-discounted PlusBus ticket, at which point he said he needed to take down my name and postcode in order to give me the Railcard discount. I have no idea why. I have never been asked for similar information before.

I'd hazard a guess that the photo on your Railcard either wasn't particularly clear, or your appearance differed from your photo, so they were just checking it was you.

for clarity, they did not ask to look at photo, just scanned the railcard code

Another factor is that online railcard photos can be changed relatively easily, which happens quite often for fare evasion (using someone else's railcard). The name however is harder to change, more often than not requiring some sort of ID.

Senior Railcard (physical version) has neither photo or barcode, just the printed railcard number, printed name and expiry date.

In which case nobody will be scanning a barcode!
