Railcard from unstaffed station

If you want to buy a railcard and use it for immediate travel, and are travelling from an un-staffed station, what do you do?

Strictly speaking you will have to buy an undiscounted ticket as you dont have a railcard. I have only encountered this situation once and they wanted a return. I sold them the discounted ticket and wrote on the ticket that they would buy the railcard on arrival.

I'd argue you don't have to purchase a ticket as no ticket issuing facilities are available for the ticket (Railcard) that you want?

Seems a bit unfair on the customer, especially if it's a renewal....

Ever heard of renewing it in good time? If mine's up for renewal and have a spare minute or two at a station I'll get it renewed up to a week beforehand.

It's the responsibility of the customer to have an up-to-date railcard if they want a discounted ticket

Not everyone travels every week or even every month.

Yes, mine for example expires on the 3rd August, in theory I could get it renewed today, there is no start date, only an expiry date so it would include the time left to run on the current one.

EDIT: Maybe not today, it's up to 30 days in advance.

You can renew your railcard up to 30 days in advance - online too, so gives the new railcard ample time to arrive

(and most people who hold one travel are likely to travel at least once a month - not everyone by any means, but the vast majority)

Back in the dim and distant past, before mobile phones, the internet and TVM's, I lived on the Cambrian Coast. To get my railcard I had to go to Ffestiniog Travel in Porthmadog, where I discovered I had forgotten my photo for the photocard! So I had to go all the way home again and make another trip to get it!

I doubt I would have got very far if I had demanded a discounted fare because my origin station was unstaffed and so I could not purchase a railcard there!

The railcard is NOT a ticket. On it's own it does not entitle you to travel. All it does is entitle you to buy tickets at reduced prices.
