I think the word devastating is really overplaying this aspect. You are right to be concerned but it really is a fairly trivial matter in criminal terms.
yes - I didn't suggest changing it because it was the OPs choice of words on what they feel their impact is but the sentence concerned could be better amended to as per your suggestion - for clarity to the OP in case it helps that would be:

I am highly anxious about the prospect of court proceedings and the devastating impact a criminal record would have on my life.

"devastating.......could" rather than "devastating.....would" might work better

I didn’t see the last posts about the wording but I did draft and send the letter with proof of purchase of my railcard. I did it online and took a screenshot of the confirmation of submission page. I’d now wait for their response.

I’m sure those minor suggestions wouldn’t make a difference so it was good to send it.
