railcard discount on off peak ticket?

at Swansea the price for off peak day return to Cardiff is £6.50 for an adult. if i travel with my son (age 7) can i get this price down a bit more with friends+family card, or is this off peak fare already at it's maximum discount?

An Off Peak Day Return is £6.50 adult as you say, the railcard discounted price is £4.30. The price you quote is undiscounted, however it is very low because of the price war between ATW and FGW in 2007.

With a Friends & Family railcard, the child fare reduces from £3.25 to £1.25

ok so the cheapest way possible from Carmarthen to Cardiff is (1) railcard discounted ticket for us from Carm - Swansea. (2) railcard discounted "off peak" fare Swansea - Cardiff. Buying separately here works out cheaper again, just like if i was travelling alone with no railcard used

Yes, it's exactly the same tickets, just with 1/3 off the price yours and 60% off the child's.

Apart from short-hop journeys, it's perhaps cheaper to split, or to buy further, in probably more cases than not these days, and it's only getting 'worse'.
