Railcard, and now MetroCard-less!

I became too old (but too young at the same time... ) for a railcard earlier this year and now I've moved closer to work I haven't renewed my MetroCard.

It has really opened my eyes up to just how much travelling on the railway costs and how quite frankly annoying some of the restrictions are. For example, due to Northern Rail 'peak time' it costing me almost £6 for a quick return trip from Saltaire to Leeds!

I know my MetroCard cost about £3 a day to run averaging it out over 365 days but it was just a nice feeling how I had the flexibility to hop around West Yorkshire I know I can buy a DayRover but I would have to plan for a trip if I was to make use of that plus it falls under the same stupid 'peak time' issues anyway!

Hopefully I get a new job soon which forces me into buying another MetroCard

i have been shot down in flames for pointing out these points to other posters lucky enough to benefit form railcard fares. The real world costs of rail travel are somewhat different to the subsidised travel offered to the privileged few

You think £5.90 is bad for Saltaire to Leeds? York to Leeds is about twice the distance, and costs a whopping £16.70!!!

(Okay admittedly those of us 'in the know' will not pay as much as that as we know of alternative fares, but the point still stands!)

Rail travel is increasingly becoming unaffordable for many.

I have never been a MetroCard holder, as I can only get to work sensibly by car. Unfortunately, I also lose my 16-25 railcard next year too - I can't say I am looking forward to it!

My 16-25 runs out in six months. I have been benefiting from it as a mature student, but my course finishes in January! Of course I'll continue to benefit from my Dales railcard and my Two Together railcard!
