Rail warrant validity

Hi,

I am the bearer of a Rail Warrant for a standard class single from Llandudno to Brighton. I have broken my journey at Chester.

When I boarded the Manchester Piccadilly bound 158 the booking office at Llandudno was shut, the guard on board the service tried to issue me a ticket on he’s (sportis?) machine but apologised that he was unable to. He advised getting a ticket on the next train or at Chester. At Chester I was ushered through the ticket barriers.

My question is can I change the warrant for a ticket in the morning? It does say date of journey 3/11/17 but expiry 4/11/17. I assume I would have been able to break my journey at Chester under Normal circumstances having in mind the late hour?

AFAIAA this should be possible, the ticket must be issued with the original start date though (03NOV17).

That cannot be done in this case, as tickets cannot be backdated AIUI unless new machines are allowing this?

You have to sell exactly what is on the warrant.

I remember having a warrant with the destination on it being “Birmingham” asked the person where in Birmingham and they gave a random station in Birmingham, refused to sell a ticket to the station they wanted as it contradicted the warrant.

Sounds like the ticket you have is a SVS? So if the sold a ticket for your journey, whilst it would perfectly valid for yourself, it would contradict what is written on the warrant and staff would get into trouble, it was something I was always very wary of because of the potential backlash from accounts.

I used to both issue and use warrants in my old job. In those circumstances, I would suggest the user purchases the ticket as written and then buys an overdistance excess to the random station in Brum. It's usually zero fare anyway.

Thanks for the replies, in the end I got to Chester on the Saturday long before the booking office opened.

I boarded 1G00 0422 CTR - BHM ATW service, Got challenged by the guard just before Crewe who was happy to issue ticket but once again after trying he said he couldn’t issue such a ticket on his machine, said it was because I had to go through London. Any ideas why this would be ?

They must have had a crew change at Crewe (no pun intended) because I was challanged again by another guard after Crewe, same thing happened.

On reaching BHM I approached the fares to pay window and explained the situation, after some umming and ahing the ticket lady said about the date being yesterday and that because I got the train before 4:30 it would be OK? Anyway she said she had trouble finding a fare but in the end she issued a ticket dated Nov 4th but only from CTR to BHM, no mention of the journey from LLD to CTR (I only noticed this after).

So why can’t they issue tickets on the train for cross London travel ?

And what’s this about the 4:30 rule ?
