Rail Warrant - Quicks Questions.

I've got a rail warrant to travel to London on the 2nd of September and I just wondered:-

Do I go to the ticket office to swap it for a ticket or does the guard do that like a 'Permit to Travel' or is it already a ticket?

It says "Warrant Expires 4/9/10" but it's for an Off Peak Return so the ticket should last until the 2nd of October, no? I might be coming back on the 5th so if I get the ticket does it specifically say 4th of September or is it just a standard return?

Also it says "Not valid with railcards". Hm. That seems odd, so the person who issued it will be paying 1/3 more for me I guess than if they'd have just bought me the ticket instead.

You'll be fine with a SVR or SOR ticket. No, no railcard discounts with a warrant.

I'm reasonably sure guards can 'exchange' rail warrants but if there is a ticket office at your departure station you should get your ticket there. There is no reason why you can't get the ticket before the day of travel at any ticket office. The warrant expiry date has nothing to do with the validity of the ticket.

Yes guards can do warrants. Speaking for my depot alone we love people jumping on board with warrants because its easy money so to speak and makes our taking looks a lot healthier. Strictly speaking you should exchange it befor travel but im sure a lot of guards will not mind doing it for you

Ah right, it's ok though I'm going from a fairly well manned station and I always turn up like 40 minutes early for a train so I'll do it then. Thanks for the advice.
