Hi!
I've purchased a rail ticket on behalf of a family member. Upon collection it had my name on the orange ticket. The traveller does have a Railcard. So would the revenue team / train manager be really picky to advise that the name on ticket must match on the rail card?

In past experience I don't think it's mattered but I just wanted to check if anything has changed!

If you print a ticket using through the ToD system (ticket on departure), machines print the name of the person whose account was used to buy the ticket.

This doesn't tie the ticket to being used by that person - since a couple of years ago, most tickets (other than season tickets) can now be transferred to a other person or even sold (for no more than face value).

In any event you have always been able to buy tickets on behalf of others.

That might be the case with some retailers and/or some machines but it certainly isn't always the case. I have never had a ToD ticket with my name printed on it that I can recall, and definitely not on any of those I've had recently.

It was the case with our Trainline account when I worked for a large British telecommunications company.

I've recently had ToD tickets printed with:
  • My surname
  • "CUSTOMER"
  • Nothing in the name area

I believe that a name is only mandatory for Advance tickets.

Looking at various pictures of tickets I've collected recently, only Advance tickets (and seat reservation coupons) have my surname on, while all others only have the ToD CTR and retailer NLC.

I've had Advances without a name on, and bought from Trainsplit.

No idea then.

I do know that, as a general rule, we avoid giving the industry as much info as possible when selling products though.

Northern Delay Repay free tickets have your name written on, so I assume that these are not transferable.

The CCST spec for X10 says, of this particular field:

If local operational processes require it, otherwise blank.

Photo of CCST ticket showing name A WILLIAMS

I can only assume some TOCs/TIS suppliers decided "local operational processes" required it and others didn't..! The above was collected at an Avanti machine..

LSM gets initials and surname for name.

Is the name taken from the customer details supplied to LSM, or is it in a separate field as well (I can't remember whether it was there twice)? Trainline, for guest checkout, just call everyone "A Customer" and I don't think I've ever seen that on a ticket.

As an aside, I've just noticed that the last ToD I collected, and which was bought from Trainsplit, shows as having been issued at NLC 3043 and I know that's wrong!

As in 3043 next to the CTR or as part of the long ticket number?

Are you sure, we might have booted up the old ticket printers again

3043 is, I think, allocated to Trainsplit's parent company.
Indeed - it is the NLC for Raileasy.

I saw a picture of some tickets sold by Trainsplit on Twitter this morning. Although all of the tickets were sold in one transaction, only some of the tickets carried the buyer's name so there must be some distinction by ticket type (or some other factor).
