Rail Staff Travel on LUL

Rail staff travel cards can be used on certain sections of the underground without the need to purchase priv rate tickets (e.g. Bank - Waterloo, Liverpool Street - Stratford, Putney Bridge - Wimbledon). Are LUL gate staff at the relevant stations clued up on this entitlement as a dated staff travel card won't operate the barriers . Does anyone have experience of this. Thanks in advance.

And given your conscientiousness is beyond that of the 'average' LU worker, I'm pretty sure that it's not something you'd have been told about or readily made available to LU staff.

Hopefully one day when you're a high-flying manager you can re-design the ticket training given to LU staff Or maybe just have a word with the current trainers if you get the chance

Training for LU barrier staff does appear to be an issue, from the reports I've heard here (and personal experiences others have told me) and from my own personal experience too.

Unfortunately I don't work for LU, and as LU staff are not too pleased about the differences in travel facilities offered I don't suppose they're going to go out of their way to answer this one......

My unfortunate experience with the LU staff I have come across is that if they hold an opinion on something (like whether a given ticket exists, whether photography is permitted, whether a line is open/closed) they will not budge - even if you show them they're wrong. The fun I had when the railcard discounts first came out was ridiculous - had to stand at the ticket office and refuse to move until a supervisor was fetched, who actually had a clue what he was doing. I have heard staff openly admit that they do not bother reading the traffic circular, which they are supposed to.

I wouldn't buy a ticket, even for just £2, if it's something that by right I don't have to pay for!

Incidentally, that list (with a few exceptions) is a fascinating demonstration of just how many lines were part of the national railway network at some point (British Rail, Big Four or previous companies).

You can only buy Priv rate single tickets now unless you use Oyster PAYG. If you fill in the form you can get Priv rate Oyster.

That's why I want to make the most of the bits of LU where we are able to travel for free with a dated staff travel card; just don't know whether the barrier staff will recognise the staff travel card as being valid.

As many LUL staff get priv rates on National Rail they will wave you through with boxes anyway. I have had this several times & once after losing my pass & was travelling with another ATOC staff card holder was also told no problem & to explain again at Liverpool St. I understand if RPIs boarded i may have been in trouble but the barrier staff were good as gold.

Even though i have told other colleagues about the 'free' parts of the tube we are entitled to they usually cannot be bothered. Often easier to just touch the priv Oyster as cheap as chips anyway.

Well whatever you do don't use the Thames Clipper service with your Oyster, it's well expensive - the tube in comparison although might be cramped is actually a damn site cheaper.

£4.80 for a single from Embankment to Blackfriars - I could have done half the LUL routes for that!

Christ, I would have thought it would be the same as the buses, LOROL, LUL, DLR etc...

Still apart from that was quite nice on the river and we had a lot of seats to choose from which we wouldn't get on the LUL services.

Would you be leaving the network multiple times or would you simply be travelling around the network transferring between lines?

Just transferring between various lines, the line I do like is the Met with it's luxurious seating as opposed to the regular seating on the other services.

I probably do the a set amount of routes one day and the reminder the following day.

During the off peak of course as it's no fun using the Underground in the peak!

Well if you only enter and leave the network once, then you'd be charged the maximum fare twice that day. You'd then need to email (it's free!) or call (premium rate!) the oyster helpdesk who would resolve your journey.. so, basically, although they've removed the cap on the PRIV, if you only enter / exit once, and explain that you were just travelling around, you've only travelled on one journey and should only be charged the PRIV return fare from Z1-6!

If you get stopped by an RCI he may question the unresolved journey, simply explain that you're an enthusiast, and what you're doing, and also that you're planning on having the journey resolved. Should have no problems!
