I received the following response from RENFE following a recent query. Incidentally, the email completely ignored my question but the information may be of use to other rail staff who are planning trips in Spain by train

In response to your request for information received on 01/22/2016 we inform you that:
You can travel free with FIP card (entertainment) in trains RENFE, for AVE trains - Long Distance, reservations are necessary and pay the following surcharges depending on type of train and class.
The booking and payment of the supplement international passes must be carried out at points of sale (box office) of the main stations or authorized travel agencies.
Tickets usually go on sale 62 days before the travel date, and are available while supplies squares or up to five minutes before the train departs.
Supplements to be paid by the formalization of international passes are:

Economy: 10.00
Economy Plus: 10.00
Preferred without restoration: 13.00
Preferred to restoration: 23.50
Club: 38.00
LONG DISTANCE TRAINS:
Economy: 6.50
