Rail Software Developer Work

I have heard it said on this forum that the predominant path for embedded software developers to get into embedded rail systems (both vehicles and signals) is from an existing embedded systems job. Can anyone with a related career confirm or deny this? I would very much like to get into software work on the UK rail network and need guidance on how best to do this. Thanks in advance.

We have had a number of issues with members trying to set up duplicate accounts in this forum.
