Anyone know if train upgrades are available on Sail Rail? if they are, when and where-like ticket office or on train?
On ferries-Irish Ferries for sure-you can usually change to 1st class (or whatever they call it) on board if it's not already fully subscribes. But since a good part of the value of upgrade (exclusive lounge-free tea and bikkies-newspapers etc is in priority priveleged access and departure for vehicles on and off ship, it's not quite the value for footies as for wheelies!:D8-)

on a weekend? no problem i'm sure.

there are no 'upgrade' supplements on weekdays; only excesses. that would cost a fortune!

That's not my experience. When I travelled by Irish Ferries from Holyhead to Dublin as part of a SailRail journey in 2007, the Club Class lounge cost £10 and offered plenty food and, it seemed, unlimited complimentary wine.

I'm not sure you can even excess a SailRail ticket because there is no First Class fare to excess it to. I suspect you would be charged a First Class single for the portion of the rail journey travelled in First Class, as if no ticket had been held.

Have travelled SailRail at weekends and have been able to upgrade to first on FGW (when it was only £10 from Paddington to Swansea) and a cabin on the boat

You can get a 'weekend first' upgrade no problem - they're available with any std ticket. Weekdays, there's no rail upgrade option - you have to book the train and ferry components separately, at considerable cost.

Does anyone know if the first class upgrades are valid within Ireland? The IE website suggests they are:

First Class / Citygold Upgrades Adults (inc. Students) / Children Reserving a Citygold/First Class (1) seat for people in possesion of a standard class ticket on certain Iarnród Éireann INTERCITY Services (excluding Cross Border) the supplement applies for each single journey on a particular route irrespective of type of ticket held. Upgrades are subject to availability. Yes Yes When purchased online you will be assigned a reserved seat at no extra cost on the reservable leg(s) of the journey

Does anyone know how much they are, and whether one supplement applies for the through journey, or is it per train?
