Rail & Sail with Stena?

Hello all,

I am trying to travel from Arnhem to Oxford via ferry this time.
I always thought there was a rail & sail option. Is that option gone.

Stena wants 286€ return for a foot pax on the overnight journey from Hoek van Holland. Trains are not even included.

Also at https://booking.stenaline.co.uk/ferry-to-holland/rail-and-sail you can book a one-way trip in English. Its a bit weird as the "Outward" menu has "Any Greater Anglia Station" for both of the "From" options. However, you can pick a one way journey, that ends up in Harwich

thank you. Being in Germany I used the German site and checked the UK one. The trip to Arnhem is included in the DeutschlandTicket to my amazement. The "any Greater Anglia Station" is what I tripped on.

From recent checks, the ticket is a little cheaper than the ordinary foot passenger fare, but prices have increased substantially, at least at peak times.

The foot passenger fare can fluctuate a bit but it is the mandatory cabin (for all passengers including sail-rail) that will push the price into the €200 territory, particularly if the cheaper cabins are sold out and only the premium ones are available.

The day sailing has no cabin requirement so is substantially cheaper.

Also valid on DB trains to Enschede and EURO to Venlo-of course only on R/RE. To Arnhem you will still be greeted as it being on ´Abellio´ service-likely very well known to you Brits. DO however very carefully check times-there are very long time standing railworks and bus -replacement on quite a long part of this RE19 to Arnhem-best found to see if the ICE have been rerouted (not stopping Duisburg-Düsseldorf)
And wou will know that since the railline to HvH, boat port, is now RET=metro, it cannot accept the sail+rail tickets. You can pay the sector by credit/bankcard, avoiding even the need to buy a ticket

I can see RET not wanting to accept the sailrail tickets but I don't see how that prevents NS from doing so.

And as a warning, at least as of last year, it is cheaper to buy a 2 hour RET ticket from a machine than use pay as you go to get to Schiedam Centrum to change to NS.

NS actually stopped selling tickets through third parties alltogether. Their E-tickets now also have the requirement to be either printed or loaded into the NS app due to fraud. The maximum number of entries and exits using a QR-code therefore has also been limited.

And as a warning, at least as of last year, it is cheaper to buy a 2 hour RET ticket from a machine than use pay as you go to get to Schiedam Centrum to change to NS.

It still is, though the difference is just 42 cents.

... and their pilot project to have a print-at-home Dutch rail ticket which had to be booked as a separate transaction (even though paid for under the rail&sail booking) was too complex for many people and therefore not successful and they didn't want to continue it. When asked (in 2021) when approximately NS think combi tickets will be available again, they could not give any indication.

Thank you all for your input. With the Venlo service stopping in Schiedam that might be the best option.

The direct trains from Venlo to Schiedam go via Utrecht and Schiphol nowadays, so that’s a huge detour. Changing in Eindhoven and Rotterdam is much quicker.
