Due to the line being shut busses are operating between Taunton and Exeter. Does anybody know what buses/coaches are operating these?

How do the drivers keep up their route knowledge?

Short answer: they don't.

Especially on emergency work where operators are from out of the local area the drivers will often be left to themselves to work it out, using a satellite navigation system if they have one. Major stations are usually signposted but 'stopping' routes can be a nightmare, with stations located off main roads, and not always signed.

getting lost is one thing,

bridge strikes - itls acalled observation ... something which it appears is trained out of footplate staff and replaced with ro(u)te learning ... that said a 'go around' is rather harder for a train than it is for a road vehicle or aircraft
