Rail replacement bus 'bashing'

Does anyone have a taste for 'bashing' rail replacement buses? I admit to rather enjoying these, as you are effectively getting an express bus service, often going down roads not served by bus or served infrequently.

I do it occasionally especially since it gives you an opportunity to sample some very interesting traction you wouldnt otheriwse be able to too such as Volvo Alisa or a good old Dennis Javelin

I remember when the Coventry - Nuneaton line was "bustituted" when the WCML was being upgraded in 2003/04 a Leyland National (think in old Midland Red livery too )appeared a couple of times, even complete with "British Rail" on the destination blind too .

Off topic, but on occasions a Leyland National is used by Stena Line at Fishguard Harbour to take foot passengers from the train platform and onto the ship and vice versa

Not the first time I've seen something like that mentioned in the railway press (albeit as an April Fool). Many years ago there was mention in 'Rail Enthusiast' magazine that there was going to be a book published (similar style to the Platform 5 rolling stock books) listing all the B&Q stores visible from passing trains.

if they do I suggest that they make a visit to Leicester as there is a Tesco Express on nearly every street corner.

It's really not that ridiculous. There can be many rare/interesting vehicles used on rail replacement services that would normally only be used on school/contract services and the rail replacement provides a rare opportunity for members of the public, and therefore spotters, to ride on them. It's really no different than rail enthusiasts travelling on railtours/specials.

Me, myself, don't mind a good ride on a rail replacement. Apart from when I was in cornwall and had a rusty Transit van to take us to Truro, my seat had a massive gash in it and the window seal was all green with moss. Eurghh

I fail to see how it's that strange. Rail replacement services can offer the opportunity to ride on many vehicles that are normally only available for private hire. If you like buses/coaches.....

To me, I'll bash types of transport vehicles, but I couldn't give a damn about covering all the fleet of such a thing and ticking off each number. I don't see the point, but each to their own!

As for the retail proposals, no I wouldn't bash a store (!) but as someone who takes an interest in the business of retailing I will look in all sorts of stores purely out of interest.

This. Considering a hell of a lot of people deride train enthusiasm, it disappoints me that so many of you are taking the p**s out of people who like buses/anything else.

If people enjoy something let them carry on (unless they're sexual miscreants of course ) !

Exactly, people enjoy things like transport and there is nowt wrong with it. They cant say anything because they just sit on the Xbox all day and night. (Yes I play Xbox but only for 2 hours max if I honestly have nothing else to do) We actually go out and do something more constructive.

As for rail replacement buses, there are a few reasons people like them, as mentioned, most of the time definitely in my experience they are rare buses or buses that are maybe in storage having been in regular service 20 years ago

A lot of modern buses are boring and/or rubbish. Rail replacements giv us the chance to step back to a time when "decent" (or rather decent to an enthusiast, which usually means "useless" to everyone else) buses were everywhere - Nationals, Lynxes, Olympians, whatever. Now what do we get?

Darts. And maybe the odd Volvo coach on a good day.

It seems a lot of people like rail replacement buses because you often get unusual vehicles. I'm more interested in the actual routes themselves and I prefer to have a comfortable modern vehicle, preferably a coach. The rail analogy would be travelling on a loco-hauled train on diversion using a line that normally is only served by DMUs, or on a freight line.

Speaking of "p**s" - there are Toilet spotters on Youtube... (I suggest you use Incognito Mode or Private Browsing less Youtube starts recommending Toilets to you in your feed)

During the 1980's I think , I and two freinds travelled from sheffield to dover just to do the Dover to ?????? rail replacement buses - they were east kent Regent V's !

You don't to think back to more than just a month or two ago to remember Coventry - Nuneaton being 'bustitued' (fantastic word btw!). I think London Midland got their driver out of bed now though.

Nope, it was a local minibus company I think judging by the logo on the drivers jacket. The actual bus was just white with rust everywhere

I would think this is an interesting subject, and although not a bus spotter as such still enjoy seeing them and can see the connection between this and trains using unusual routes, and would always welcome a thread with photos if anyone has them.
