After a nasty-sounding cyber-attack, the site was down for a while but is now back

This is a fantastic resource. For those who don't know it, it contains, amongst other things, modern and historic railways overlaid on Google Maps / Open Street Map / Statellite

The map of disused canals caught my attention. There's one between Bolton and Bury that skirts Little Lever and goes through Radcliffe. To me, as it's disused, would make a perfect tram-way with passing loops to connect Bolton and Bury again!

Anyhow, thanks for the reminder about the site, will spend many a happy hour staring at it (maps, eh?!)!

I think that one is already under restoration, including the historic feature at Nob End!

The restoration of a section of canal which was destroyed in a spectacular collapse almost 90 years ago is set to be completed this year.

The gigantic breach happened close to the Nob End locks, on the canal’s arm towards Bury. At the point of collapse, a bend of the River Irwell had eroded the valley side, creating a steep slope.

Ah, I missed all that! What an opportunity to alter its use to a tramway!

There are many nice walks around there too, since it's all been regenerated

Of course many old rail lines are now walking or cycleways, and that map is a good guide as to where they are.

It would overcomplicate if walkways were marked, but is there a specific closed rail map which identifies such?

If you use the open street map version of Rail Map Online, it has walkways, bridle ways etc.
