Why not just contact one of the many authors of BVE content which have superb sounds, in a readily useable file format. I'm sure there wouldn't be a problem.

I'd have just taken a sound recorder on the Atherton line :P

I did consider going for a ride on a HST somewhere and recording out of the door window, but then i'd get the wind noise and MTU sounds, which I don't want. I think the method I have used will do, as you might see if I decide to post a link to it on here

Where I live there is a railway at the back of my garden which has CWR in the up direction and jointed in the down direction!
