Rail grinders in underground metro systems

There was a rail grinder running on my line on the Brussels Metro over the weekend.

I noticed in my stop (Tomberg, a sub surface station) that almost every flat surface was covered in very noticeable layer of grey dust. All over the platforms, through the concourse, handrails etc. Right up to entrances. Children going to school were skating on it. The elderly taking it very gently on the stairs.

Coming home from work the cleaners were still trying to deal with it. It really was everywhere.

Can anything be done to prevent this on the grinding equipment itself?

No idea, but I know London Underground grind the rails regularly and I don't remember ever seeing or hearing about that. Maybe something was wrong with the grinder?
