So? Why does one person "deserve" a tip and not the other one? Like I said: unfair.

Because:

a) It should not be a requirement to have to bribe someone to received "good service"

b) Some jobs are seemingly "deserving" of tips and others are not, even though the people who aren't may be earning the same wage, or less.

c) Once tipping becomes the "accepted norm" then everyone feels obliged to do it.

It may well be unfair, but I still don't see why that means that it should be illegal? It's hardly a bribe, more an appreciation of good service. The law is in place to maintain social order, not regulate every nitty gritty detail of daily life.

If per chance I happen to meet you in your place of work, and I offer you a bit of extra cash because I felt you deserved it, would you turn it down out of principle?

I agree with Bungle, it isn't a fair way to show your appreciation. I always turn down tips but make sure I thank them for the offer.

For some context, I develop (non-rail) websites, which means I have a small number of customers and even a "10%" tip would be hundreds of pounds. Is my work any less deserving than if I had thousands of customers?
