It has recently been announced impala are to close their milford haven storage and distribution site.

This would bring an end to the once daily, now less frequent freight services by DB to robeston.

This will be sad to see, but could this be an opportunity for further improvements in connectivity?
COMMERCIAL operations at Milford Haven’s Impala terminal will cease at the end of December 2026, the company has confirmed to The Pembrokeshire Herald.

Am I correct in thinking that Impala is the most recent rebranding of the former Puma / Murco / Amoco terminal at Milford Haven?

Importing diesel from the states is not a good business to be in currently....

[DBC and Touax are being sued by NR for Llangennech.]

It is interesting that some countries have a lot of diesel in store, in fact Germany, France and Italy enough for 90 days. The UK has 42 days. If the US decides to restrict exports, we have a problem.

That would be correct.

I do hope the government has a plan for that instance as trains and buses will become very important.

I am sure that the Government will extol the benefits of electric vehicles. But will there be stuff in shops.

France, Germany and Italy don't have 900 days supply. They have between 60-90 depending on how the figures are worked out.

Storing 900 days worth of diesel would also be fairly pointless, as it would go bad before then.

Might the terminals at Westerleigh and/or Theale instead be supplied from Immingham?

Paths are in RTT for Westerleigh to be served from Lindsey from December. Nothing yet for Theale.

I think its just the Milford Haven terminal thats shutting, paths already in place for Lindsey Refinery moves in December, whether that happeneds or not is something else, but Westerleigh is still a busy terminal, its near my work and fuel tankers always use it.

Very sad state of affairs all down to transportation costs and supply issues l presume. Is the writing on the wall for the passenger service after Swansea, years ago it was mooted that the line would be curtailed if freight traffic ceased.

We will, in the not too distant future, be at a point where demand for petrol and diesel reduces enough for us to need fewer refineries. The less efficient will go first.

Over 10% of the cars on the road now have a plug, and it is increasing by nearly 3% a year (and the rate is rising).

I doubt very much that the Welsh Government would allow their own TfW to withdraw passenger services west of West od Swansea, to say that there would be an outcry is an understatement!

Can’t really see that happening. There’s a reasonably level of demand for both the Pembroke Dock and Milford Haven branches, and Fishguard now has a more useful service as well. It would also be political suicide to close these routes.

The reality is that most the business model of Murco/Impala for a long time has been as a storage terminal for petrol export to the US (delivered by pipeline) and import of Diesel from the US which goes out by a mix of pipeline, rail and road tankers. It hasn't been a refinery for a long time.

Recently road diesel usage has been falling quicker that petrol usage hence the former balanced shipping to/from the US no longer makes as much sense.

The uniteing of the Humber refinery and extensive storage with some of the former Lindsey assets as strengthened the whole Humberside industry.

There are also long term plans underway to modify Stanlow and Fawley to produce a greater proportion of diesel and Jet A1 (both are currently light/medium sweet crude orientated) and naturally produce very high fractions of petrol. Fawley was about 8:1 petrol to diesel ratio at on point. The downside is that heating oil will get comparatively more expensive vs other fuels as there will be less of it locally.
