Rail franchises

Hi all,

apologies if covered or if in wrong forum, but was wondering if someone could point out the smallest franchises, if known, types of train, routes, number in fleet etc?? ie, the ones that are single units in country side etc

Smallest is c2c - aka LTS Rail. London Tilbury and Southend.

Yes mate, they'll be part of larger francises... an example, the brances around Norwich are in the same franchise as Norwich - London intercity, Southend, Shenfield, Enfield, Stansted, Cambridge (etc) services..

Island Line is part of the Stagecoach Empire.

Just because the franchise is being run by the same company doesn't make it part of the other franchise.

No, it'll be part of Nexus but contracted out, like the DLR or Manchester Metrolink.

1. Well if we are going to be picky why didnt you pull me up on the Island Line being part of the Stagecoach empire.

2. I can rest assure you that that both c2c and NXEA are run from the same head office, run by the same Management. I should know know how NEG do there business i worked under them under the North London Railways, Silverlink Train Services Limited, Silverlink Metro and of course London Lines branding which included if you want to belive it or not c2c, from the Hertford House HQ and latter 207 Old Street.

But then who am i to split hairs?

@313103, you're getting two very different sorts of thing confused.

Essex Thameside, South Western and Greater Anglia are rail franchises. The right to operate services in these areas is tendered by the DfT to the highest bidder.

Essex Thameside is currently operated by C2C Limited trading as C2C; South Western (which includes services from Ryde to Shanklin, as well as services from Waterloo) by Stagecoach South Western Trains Ltd trading as South West Trains, and Greater Anglia by London Eastern Railway Ltd trading as National Express East Anglia.

All contractual arrangements with the DfT are with these limited companies, which keep separate accounts and are separately managed (the MD of London Eastern is Andrew Chivers; the MD of C2C is Julian Drury).

As it happens, C2C Limited and London Eastern Railway Limited are both owned by National Express Group plc. NEG sells central services (ie office space, HR, marketing departments, etc) to both companies. But these have to be provided on a transparent, arm's length basis so that if either company lost its franchise, an incoming franchisee could easily take over - precisely as happened when the Silverlink franchise ended and was split into LO and part of LM.

Island Line is now franchised as part of the main South Western franchise, rather than separately as before.

That's the theory. In practice NEG have provided incoming franchisees with rather less than they should, the DfT proving rather toothless on the matter.
