Rail/Ferry tickets

Hey all! I'm off to Bestival on the IOW soon. I'll be getting a ticket from Coventry to East Cowes. Will I just be able to get on any ferry with that, or will I need to get in touch with Red Funnel to specify a time?

You can hop on any conventional car ferry from the terminal they run about every 90mins or if you buy a ticket to West Cowes you can get the faster and more frequent RedJets (approx. another £10).

The bus for town quay for the ferries is free and leaves from outside platform 4 at Southampton Central.

Also it would be cheaper to buy an advance (or possibly an off-peak ticket) to Southampton and buy a 'through' ticket from the machines at Southampton Central or online.

Coventry to Southampton Central can be done off-peak for £65.20 walk on splits should bring that down (I haven’t taken off any railcard discounts as you don't say if you have one.)

Southampton Central to East Cowes is £15.20 for an off-peak return or West Cowes is £16.30.

Compared to a return from Coventry to East Cowes which is £148.00 make quite some saving!!

The reason being IIRC is that outside the South East area only anytime fares are available for through journeys.

Thanks I'm thinking we might be cheap and get the normal ferry. If we all buy our rail tickets together, will we be able to reserve seats on the XC leg of the journey?

Yes seats on the XC leg if advance tickets are compulsory otherwise this can be done online at the time of booking or at any staffed station.

Cool. I think we're getting the off peak (80ish, i'm getting a 16-25 at the same time as it pretty much pays for itself bar a few pence), just to make things a bit easier on the return leg

I can see the SOR from Coventry to East Cowes for 90.55

A Coventry to Southampton Central SVR route: NOT LONDON is available to depart both Coventry and Southampton Central at or after 09:30 - £43.05

A Southampton Central to East Cowes (only from Southampton to East Cowes not the RedJets) SVR leaving Southampton at or after 09:30 and returning by any ferry is £10.05

Total: £53.10 (with railcard)


As I said there will be splits on that route to bring down the cost of the Coventry to Southampton part.

Splitting at Oxford is a start:

Coventry - Oxford Route Banbury Off-Peak Return £17.65
Oxford - Southampton Central Route Any Permitted Off-Peak Return £22.45

£2.95 saving compared to the Coventry - Southampton through ticket.

I did think of this but the difficulty is you will not be able to get one until the 5th; admittedly that is only an issue for advance tickets.

Also this new railcard does not give discount on either through ferry tickets to IOW or there is just no discount on the add part for the ferry - I will check which later.
