Money saved to be spent on HS2 I wonder? If further electrification is possible will it be in 3rd rail territory not so disruptive and or visually impacting?
What money saved? The real reason for the cancellations are the spiralling estmates for the costs of electrification and an increased spend on maintenance at the expense of enhancements. Network Rail budgets are not being axed, just not seeing a large increase that would be necessary if projects are not cancelled.
According to NR/DfT presentations discussed elsewhere, the estimates for Trans Pennine electrification have gone from £250m to £650m to over £1bn.
