Background
Assertis is an established online ticket retailer and ticket issuing system (TIS) provider, having sold tickets online since 2008. Together with our retail and TOC partners we plan nearly a million journeys every day, and sell hundreds of millions of pounds of tickets every year. We are expanding rapidly, with more new clients onboarding soon.
The roles
We are looking for experts in rail data (fares, routeing, schedules, live running etc.) and, especially, in the application and use of that data, to help with continuously improving our search products, ensuring that we find the right itineraries and all valid fares, including fares on cheaper, slower routes and split tickets. Given the complexity, quality and inconsistency of GB rail data, this is no small task!
Our ambitions for our search products stretch well beyond just fares and schedules, though. We want to transform the experience of rail customers by making it far easier for them to choose the right ticket for them; by providing much more, and better information about train services and stations, so that they can enjoy a smoother, smarter journey; and by ensuring they get timely and relevant information as they travel, especially during times of disruption.
Your responsibilities in this role will be varied and interesting. You will help to analyse the impact of data updates on our search results, and check for their correct application. You will help our service desk to analyse and resolve Jira tickets raised by clients. You’ll need to visit stations and travel on services to gather data and experience real-world situations as customers see them - and then bring ideas back to our team to improve our products further. You will help to develop our search product roadmap - bringing ideas, contributing to the debate, and helping implement new features that can make a difference to millions of rail travellers. Overall, your goal will be to continually improve the quality of our search product, and to exceed the expectations of our clients and customers.
Joining our team and how we work
You’ll join our search team, which comprises product experts, other rail experts and analysts and, of course, developers experienced in working with rail data. Work is mostly remote, but we get together regularly for face-to-face meetings, as well as daily for stand up calls. Our search team also meets in person for workshops every quarter, in either the UK or Poland - you will be a vital part of making these workshops work, by bringing insight, analysis, ideas and solutions.
Our whole company gets together twice a year too, for summer and winter parties. This is a great chance to meet everyone properly. 2025 was Assertis’ 25th birthday, so we celebrated in real style with a summer party in Switzerland, including a trip on the RhB from Chur to St Moritz, with a private dining coach and private seated coach all to ourselves. We were determined to celebrate this milestone in style!
About you
You’ll be able to demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of both GB rail data and the GB rail network and operations generally. You will have both a curious mind and an attention to detail. You will be used to working with structured data, and to analysing and breaking down complex problems into their constituent parts. You will be able to communicate ideas and solutions well to others, and to work well within a team, bringing new ideas to the table and helping others develop their ideas too. As well as working within a team, you will be able to work on tasks by yourself.
We have two roles to fill; one for a more experienced, senior rail data expert and analyst; the other for someone with a mid-level of experience. For the former we would expect a minimum of five years (and preferably more) relevant experience. For the latter, a minimum of three years relevant experience.
You must be resident in the UK and already have the right to work in the UK.
