I think you've misunderstood my comment. I was asking if you meant "ad infinitum". "Ad finitum", as you wrote, means something done for a finite time.

I was not arguing for continuing above-inflation fare rises.

Inflationary increases to rail fares are a self fulliing cycle given that rail tickets are included in the basket of products used to calculate inflation in the first place.
