Just wondering, how do you go about getting a job in the Rail accident investigation branch?

At the risk of sounding disingenuous - you apply when a vacancy comes up and hope to be successful!

Honestly though, I too looked into the "Inspector" jobs with them recently as a future career prospect - but there were no vacancies - although this is unsuprising as only 18 people make up the office. The ORR are much bigger and take on staff more frequently if you're trying to get into that sort of arena.

I have seen both admin and inspector jobs advertised, but as silv1983 says, it's quite a small organisation so the frequency that vacancies arise will be low.

As it's (in effect) civil service, jobs will appear on civil service jobs website and on RAIB's own website.

From memory, for inspector roles, they will want some relevant experience / background, such as engineering, investigation, railway operations.

How about if you do have a degree, come from rail operations... and have investigative experience?

The adverts I've seen were after people with experience in investigating operational incidents. Think ex driver managers, or similar. As stated, people with relevant engineering experience too.

I assisted in the depot familiarisation of some of the RIAB investigators when it was first introduced and only one of then had railway experience - they didn't even know what the notice cases were for. I had 13 years train driving experience, including qualifications in investigations, interview techniques, H & S qualifications x 4, human factors qualifications & many others, I enquired about a vacancy to be told without a degree don't bother applying.

If you have the above in your post it is worth a try however don't hold your breath.
