Race and Forum

I'm interested about the demography of this forum, in terms of skin colour, and wondering if this rail forum (and an interest in railways in general) has a wide enough interest for people of different races. I'm just rather curious if the proportion of other races interested in the railways equal to the proportion for whites. The results would be hidden, but if you wish, you can talk about it.

(I'm, for one, black and proud . Dunno if there's any other black people on this forum though...:?)

I'm white British, and in terms of football eligibility I'd only be able to play for England (my dad's family originate from Ireland but only if you go back 4-5 generations). I was apparently conceived in Wales but I don't think Chris Coleman will be lobbying FIFA to change the rules! I'd always considered railway enthusiasm to be a predominantly white, middle-class pastime but meets through this forum and others have proven this assumption to be inaccurate.

White and English, though my father was born in Cardiff so I could probably play for Wales or Glamorgan if they were sufficiently desperate! I was born in London and we both regard ourselves as English.

I'm currently living in that little patch of England occupied by the Welsh.

I agree with Neil that text-only media (which I've been using for 30-odd years now) allow you to concentrate on the message without unwarranted preconceptions about the contributors.

Sorry if I appeared to be asking for your personal information as I wasn't really aiming for that.

I was supposed to create a anonymous poll to go with this thread, so for those who want to take part in the thread but not talk about it could make an anonymous choice, and I can collect statistics to see how diverse the forum is. That obviously went wrong . Really, I don't mean any hate among you good people for what skin color you are, and I will certainly never hate this forum for how diverse it is.

Seven of the respondents so far have met me and will already know the answer that I am white, though I was brought up among people of many ethnicities, and it was only when I left primary school at the end of Year 6 that I realised anyone made a fuss or cared about what ethnicity anyone else was.

Regarding being brought up amongst different ethnicities, I would say it was a similar time I probably started to learn of the fuss too. The junior school I attended was certainly multicultural too and other than I recall a few people not partaking in assemblies at the discretion of parents (it was a CofE school, not that I was CofE) I don't recall anything else that would have been seen as different

Just an observation - on all the the railtours I've been on all of my fellow travelers appear to have been exclusively white. I've never seen a non-white (e.g. black or asian) person on a railtour. And when I was a youth all trainspotters and gricers appeared to be white as well. Is there is reason for this?
