I've noticed there doesn't seem to be much consistency regarding quiet coaches on the EMT class 222 fleet especially the 5 car sets.

From my own observations, all the 7 car sets do have them (although 222005 was without earlier this year).
Of the 5 car sets, at least 222007 / 022 have them but I haven't seen them on other sets, and as far as I am aware there never have been quiet coaches on the 4 car sets.

All a bit of a lottery if you want to have an hour's kip on the train on your way to work.

They all do, Meridians have 1 car of First and 1 car of 2/3 First 1/3 Standard, Pioneers have 1 car of First and 1 car of 1/3 Standard. The cars with two types are called "Composite" carriages.

Originally, the Meridians were in 9-car and 4-car configurations. This meant the 4-car Meridians had almost half their space taken up by First Class! Clearly overkill, and the Composite car was declassified. The current internal configurations work pretty well I think.

If you offer First Class, you have to make sure there is enough to satisfy demand at the very busiest times of day. If they just had Coach G they'd be woefully over-capacity in the peaks.

Yes but if you are a five coach Meridan and you have one and a half coaches as first class but three and a half coaches as normal standard class, say that the train gets full up and they don't declassify First Class, there isnt a lot of room for standing in them things!

Does that happen often? I rarely use the MML.

No. EMT (and MML) did a very good job forecasting train requirements (on Mainline services).

More regularly I find people just sitting in the vestibules despite there being plenty of seats anyway! The only time I've experienced a problem was on a short-formed service.
