Quick routing question: Rugby-Lichfield City/Trent Valley

Could one of the routing experts answer a quick question:

Using an Off-peak day return from Rugby-Lichfield (City or Trent Valley), is it allowed to travel out via Birmingham New Street (to break journey for a couple of hours) and back direct via Nuneaton?

I think it's going to be ...

To Trent Valley, no. (Only map TV is available - that allows via Coventry->Nuneaton as well as the direct (and shortest) route but not via Birmingham)

To City, yes. (Both destination routeing points - Birmingham Group and Lichfield Trent Valley - pass the fares check so you have a choice of map TV or map EB - the latter gets you to New Street )
