Is it possible to find out which unit was working a particular service from approximately 15 years ago, or are all these records 'in the bin' now?

Also do specific units from a class deliberately get rostered to work a particular diagram more frequently than other diagrams, or even deliberately not put on particular diagrams for whichever reason?

Almost certainly binned now.

Our fleet/crew allocation system at GWR goes back 3 calendar years; but to go more than a couple weeks back you need to go through an archive reports thingy. I suspect TOCs with the same software will be the same, TOCs with different software I don’t know.

To your second question - it isn’t uncommon for units to pick up restrictions on where they specifically can/can’t work - although they’re normally temporary in nature. Permanent restrictions like that are much rarer.

Thanks. I wondered whether units which are considered to be more reliable tend to work diagrams with longer mileage involved, and vice versa for the more unreliable units.

Try asking anyway; it's always possible someone on here might have a record or even a photograph of a specific working - you never know...

The planned diagrams will normally include a number of which are designed, by the planners, to allow the Controllers to get units back to maintenance depot(s) at short notice. Such diagrams may be used by units that have non safety related defects, whereby the unit is quite safe to run in service but will get attention as soon as it's back on depot. Other such diagrams are designed as very low (per day) mileage, out and back from/to same maintenance location. These can be allocated to units that may be low on exam miles, or perhaps if something like new on board tech is being tested, it will allow the unit(s) to return to base asap for ongoing static testing (or whatever).
So it is possible to see the exact same unit (by painted number) on the very same service for several days, but that in itself is nothing untoward.
