From my flat overlooking Marylebone Station I see the drivers walking the length of the Class 68 to turn the engine off on arrival. Why do they do that if it can be turned off from the DVT? Do they need the exercise?
If a Class 68 is shut down at the end of a journey from Birmingham to London and is due to leave London 30 minutes later, how long before departure does it need to be started up again in order to carry out necessary safety checks and build up brake pressure?
I'm sure that's a 'how long's a piece of string' type question. While the safety checks will be pretty standard, each set will lose pressure at slightly different rates on different days.Does anyone have a definitive answer to this question, please.

Would it be possible (I imagine so unless regulations have changed, though it would be expensive) to reverse the rakes so that locos were at the London end, and install a system like that used for the thumpers at Victoria? By which I mean the exhaust ducts designed to pump diesel emissions out of the trainshed?
But why?
They may interfere with the lifestyles of people who live or work overlooking the open end of Marylebone?
Quite a few times I've been in the car driving under a bridge along the Chiltern Mainline, and you KNOW when a 68 goes over. Those things are impressively loud.

There's a qualitative difference though between the comparatively high pitched sound of a DMU engine being run at high speed and the low, almost infrasonic rumble of a Class 68 at idle. You can feel it as much as you can hear it.The irony is that using "compressor speed-up" on a DMU to build up air pressure because the unit's been shut down for an hour and restarted 10 minutes before departure in line with the usual noise reduction policy is potentially louder than a 68 at idle...though I have no empirical data to back that up.
While I agree that the railway was there first, it's not unreasonable to seek a practicable way to ameliorate the nuisance.Looks like we probably are one of the "I moved next to a railway and am complaining its noisy" type.

It sounds like Chiltern already shut them down on arrival and fire them up shortly before departure. Not really sure what else the OP expects them to do...
