Absolutely yonks ago. I'll try and find the last time this came up for discussion:

http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=111900

...where someone reckoned it had been used in the sixties

and that leads to a prior thread:

But I still don't think you'll find an exact date of last proper timetabled use - over the years there hasn't even been a consensus amongst staff about whether they can be used in extremis, or not.

Just checking 1963 timetable.

In the up direction there were Guildford via Cobham trains at 6.59, 7.29, 7.49 which were then Wimbledon only. The 7.29 must have used the Up Fast.

To my surprise, in 1959 there wasn't a 7.49, but the first up stopper from Basingstoke called at 7.53, giving NM a steam train non stop to Waterloo - I suspect that was primarily to set down staff heading for the London District offices Wimbledon?

Back to the topic - the times were unchanged in 1966-67, but I'd be fairly certain the 1967 timetable revision took out the "fast" trains and that's when the island platform ceased regular use. The timetable I knew well in my Waterloo days (late 70s) was basically unaltered from 1967...

My 1960s memories as a passenger only are limited to the stretch between Raynes Park and Waterloo... :(

I lived in New Malden from 1997 - 2002 and I'm pretty certain I alighted on the Down Fast platform at least once during Sunday engineering works. It's quite possible I didn't but my memory tells me I did.

My uncle who went to school from New Malden to Waterloo 6 days a week in the early 1960's remembers getting a fast train every Saturday from the island platform up fast just before 8 am. It was always hauled by one of the named class 5 standards in the 73080 to 73088 range. He thinks it was from Basingstoke all stations to Woking & then New Malden only. It was a great treat.
Two giant DOO mirror monitors remained on the island platforms until recently & may still be there. An example of BR & then SWT managements' craven defeat at the hands of ASLEF in the 1990's & then later & an indication that the New Malden island platform was intended to be used right up to then.

I remember taking a train from Wimbledon P7 on the DF, crossing to UF @ Wimbledon West Junction and running wrong line for a good distance (Weybridge?)... Pretty sure we stopped at New Malden UF platform...This was in the 90s. Don't have my notes handy right now.

In the immediate aftermath of the Clapham crash, was the island platform at New Malden used to evacuate people stuck on the long queue of trains which would have quickly backed up behind the crash?

Some years ago I alighted at the New Malden middle platform from a class 159. Certainly not a scheduled stop - it had to be terminated due to a train fault.
