Hello, so currently I am working on a scenario for a train simulator which will take place on the WCML and have a TSR somewhere along the route. I plan to place an AWS ramp so that the driver will receive a warning of the upcoming restriction. My question for anyone who knows is how far in advance of the TSR is the driver usually warned about it? I know it depends on track speed but I'm talking about for the high-speed sections of the route where the speed is 110 or 125mph. I want to make it as realistic as possible but don't know what the regulations on this are.

Thanks

The AWS goes 200yd before the TSR warning board. The warning board is at 'braking distance' from the start of the restriction. This is determined from a table based on gradient, line speed and restriction speed (125 to 20 down a steep hill needs a lot further than 90 to 80 up a steep hill).

The general guidance on setting up TSRs is here: https://catalogues.rssb.co.uk/rgs/standards/RIS-0735-CCS Iss 1.pdf
This document sets out the requirements for signing of Temporary Speed Restrictions (TSRs) and Emergency Speed Restrictions (ESRs).

This reference the standard containing the braking distances: https://catalogues.rssb.co.uk/rgs/standards/GKRT0075 Iss 5.pdf
This document specifies the Minimum Signalling Braking Distance (MSBD) and the Minimum Deceleration Distance (MDD) for lineside signal spacings and the signing of permissible speed changes.
The Appendix A tables are normally used.

Nearly.

Service braking distance is used, for the heaviest and fastest unit cleared for the route.

The warning magnet can be closer dependant on where the restriction applies, for example close to signals - they can make the aws magnet associated to the signal into the tsr magnet.

So some can be literally miles away from the warning board
