Question about incident last week GWR

Hey guys,

I was stopped last week as I bought a ticket when I boarded the train (Crowthorne). The guard warned me and said that someone else would me give a £100 fine but he didn’t. He said he reported be to identify any trends and I expect to wait 3 weeks for a response. He scanned my ticket and said I didn’t need to give anymore details. What am I expecting to happen next? I’ve never had an incident like this before

If the guard scanned the ticket which was bought online, all the necessary details can be found from the booking account.

Boarding a train without a valid ticket is an offence (except in specific circumstances).

They may check any / all tickets you have purchased online to see how many were bought on train and not in advance.

They may then decide whether to take the matter further.

Guildford has barriers so they may try to marry up any instances where you've demonstrably purchased after departure. Would be a lot harder if it was two unbarriered stations.

You should always buy your ticket BEFORE you get on the train. On this occasion you have not been issued a Penalty Fare, and as the guard did not give you any paperwork, we don't know quite what will happen. Probably the Train Company will write to you and ask for your side of the story. When you receive that letter, put it up here with personal details redacted and you will get helpful advice.
