Regarding the early northbound Leeds-Aberdeen and late southbound Aberdeen-Leeds services, these are probably only used to get a HST to and from Neville Hill depot for maintenance rather than passenger demand.

.

Is this one still made up of the 23:30 from the Cross the night before?

I can think of one situation where it might be useful. If the current 2330 Kings X - Leeds was extended to York, Darlington, Durham, Newcastle then we'd have a much later departure to North East England than the present 2200 service. Yes, it would take forever but at least the option would be there.

They could do that anyway-only a timetable issue. The fact they don't suggests there simply isn't the demand for it. Hence they run the last Newcastle and Leeds as seperate trains.

But that doesn't make any difference to the idea of running through trains during the day just to duplicate XC and TP services.

Just as a slight aside on this topic, when I was traveling back home last Monday I noticed that the first stop on an Edinburgh bound VTEC service was York.

Is the the longest distance between 2 stops on a scheduled train service?

No. There is a Newcastle to Kings Cross non stop service. It's the 0540 from Waverley 0704 @ Newcastle.

Correction.

It must be the Lowland Sleeper. Watford to Carlisle is 281.5 miles. Newcastle is merely 268.5.

Thanks for that I didn't realise there was a non-stop train from Newcastle.
