Question about D101

Hi all

On a recent photo i added to my collection, brand new D101 by Tony Gillett at Barrow

I have been asked 2 questions

1. What was a brand new Peak class 45 doing at Barrow?
2. What are the pipes/cables under the headcode boxes?

Not sure why it would have been at Barrow - route clearing maybe?
The cables under the headcodes look like ETH cables - 45/1s were fitted with ETH but I dont know if 101 was a /1 or even if it had ETH from new.......

The picture is said to have been taken in 1961. I doubt ETH was in use at all then. If it is 1961, I can't work out why the headcode boxes are blacked out, either.

The headcode could have been wound to blanks to make it look neater.

Thats a puzzling one those cables, certainly doesnt look beefy enough to be ETH, also as said I think it's slightly to early for that anyway. Can they be an early form of RCH cable or just plain mutiple working cables like TDM but earlier?

A wild suggestion... As the cables look to be going into the headcode boxes, could they be some sort of power/control cable for them? Perhaps the loco was the subject of an experiment at the time as something's definitely going on in the headcode box area?

A post to another forum suggests that they _are_ power cables for the headcode box lighting.

Multiple working jumpers were mounted on the buffer beam.....definitely a brain squuezer I cant find any other reference to cables in that location - its not even mentioned in the original Sulzer manual for the locomotives.

The cables were either power for the split head code boxes or the winding mechanism for the panels. Initialy the locos were designed for markers and gangway conections, then at short notice the split code boxes were added, later peaks had centre headcode panels consisting of 2 glas panels before the final design of a single glass panel
