I plan to travel from East Croydon to Bristol sometime after Xmas, and have been looking at advance fares for the whole journey. My question is, obviously the advance ticket is specifically for one train only for the main part of the journey (London-Bristol), which is fine. Am I also restricted to the exact train specified on the Croydon -London leg, even though there is no reservation system on Southern, and trains run every 5-10mins on that route?
Will I get into trouble if I take an earlier or later service on this part of the route?

No, as long as it is reasonable. You may get questioned if you turn up 2 hours early, but otherwise you are just providing yourself a more leisurely connection.
