Query regarding rover tickets

If I buy a 7 day ALR ticket, I assume it is valid for 7 days or part days, rather than lasting for 7 x 24 hours from when first used. In other words, if first used at 23.50 on the first day, you have in effect wasted a day. Is this correct?

Leading on from this, I assume that it expires at 23.59 on day 7. So what happens if you start an overnight journey on day 7 that doesn't finish until day 8? Is the journey valid because it started on day 7, or do you have to buy a normal ticket for the whole journey, or from the last station called at before midnight, or is it pro-rata, or what?

It is valid for seven overlapping 28.5 hour railway days, starting at 0001 on day 1 and expiring at 0429 on day 8. For a journey that is still in progress at this time, you would need to buy a ticket from the last station passed through before this time (with a rover is valid for more than 3 days the train does not need to stop at this station where you change to the new ticket).

This is obviously an awkward situation, as how can you be sure in advance what the last station passed through will be? Under the old rules on ticket validity (before October 2011) you would have been fine to continue on the same train to your destination, as long as you arrived before 12 noon on day 8. This meant that you could make an overnight sleeper journey departing late at night on day 7 or very early in the morning of day 8 of an ALR, and your rover would be valid for the entire journey. This is no longer true, although I'm not sure if the change is enforced.

I have seen it written on here before, but a quick look in the manual reveals nothing.

I don't think this is true, however I believe some sleeper attendants will accept a ticket that is one day out as it is a common mistake by punters.

The only ticket I know of that does not officially require a ticket for the date of departure is BritRail, which requires the date of arrival to be dated if travelling on the sleeper in the berths.

Potentially the advice to use sleepers on evening zero and morning 8 would be to buy the rover and the birth upgrades/reservations in the same transaction, hence a contract is created?
