Today, I will be traveling from Norwich to Stansted and London. My flight is this evening so I will make use of the extra time and go into London.

The ticket that I have from Stansted to London Liverpool Street and back says “any routes permitted”.

Since, I will be passing through Cambridge, will I be able to get the direct train from Cambridge to London or will I be fined?

Should I just go on into Stansted and change there?

Would appear to be permitted under maps ab+wa for a Norwich to London terminals ticket. I'm assuming you mean Norwich to Cambridge to London? We do however need to know what tickets you held.

As for guards/conductors on trains it's a safety thing. The route and train must be cleared for driver only operation otherwise a guard is needed (someone correct me if Im wrong). Also there are two types of guards, commercial and non-commercial, the latter type not dealing with fares and ticketing issues.

Edit: if you only had a Stansted to London ticket I don't think going via Cambridge is valid.

I saw another possibility, I interpreted the original question as more likely to be two separate tickets, Norwich to Stansted and as he said “Stansted to Liverpool St and back”.
Unless the OP tells us exactly which tickets he had, all bets are off.
