I made an overnight journey from London to Beasdale. In the event, the ScotRail train from Glasgow was delayed by just over 30 minutes. I applied for compensation and have been granted £6.50. I had an Off Peak Return (London Terminals to Beasdale) with a Railcard that cost £130.20. The £6.50 seems very low. Are my suspicions correct? If so, how should I approach?

Journey Details:
23:50 London Euston to Glasgow Central
08:25 Glasgow Queen St to Beasdale

Yes £6.50 is ridiculously low considering that the Scotrail website says you are entitled to compensation to the value of 25% of the overall cost of your return ticket in the event of you being delayed between 30 and 60 minutes, so I'd estimate you should have been offered roughly £32.

It's unclear to me where ScotRail's calculated figure comes from. It isn't a quarter of any of the fares between Glasgow and Beasdale, for example. How utterly bizarre!

You are entitled to compensation based on the full cost of all ticket(s) held for your journey and accordingly you should appeal this and ask them to take another look at your claim.

If you paid for a berth supplement on the sleeper, it's unlikely that this would be included in any calculations, however if you had a berth-inclusive fare then this should be considered.

Compensation amount paid is clearly based on the GQS to Beasdale journey not on the entire trip, whether that is correct is another matter.

Is it possible the Queen Street to Beasdale train made up some of the time on the journey as the OP says it was over half hour late at GQS. If that is the case it might explain the low amount.

Minimum threshold for Delay Repay on a Scotrail service is a delay of 30 minutes.

If the delay is 30-59 minutes, you should then receive 50% of the cost of your single ticket or 25% of the cost of your return ticket as compensation.

More if the delay is 1 hour or longer.

No idea how the £6.50 has been calculated.

I see your point.

Is it? £6.50 is not 25% or 50% of any single or return fare from Glasgow to Beasdale (with or without railcard) - so they haven't attempted to calculate the payment based on that leg only.

Divided £130.20 by 2 on a calculator misread the decimal point and then round to the nearest 10p yields £6.50

Just appeal it, it’s obviously an error.
