Query about MMI

I asked this on another thread but being impatient thought I would start another one. So one of the questions is about an achievement or a course that was over 2 weeks. I was wondering if an open university module is acceptable. I would have thought it was, but I saw someone say it is not. Interview is in the next few weeks so just want to prepare.

I think this is perfectly acceptable. Open University shows you have dicipline and are committed to learning [as long as you see the course through!].

I used it as an answer during my driver line managers interview and there were no problems for me.

You just need to structure your answer correctly.

Thank you so something along the lines of. I have done an OU course in spare time talk about time management structuring my study, not being too proud to ask for advice from tutors that sort of thing.

An OU course would be a perfect example imo. Remember they are looking to invest in you and they want to know you are comfortable and confident in a classroom environment. Try to incorporate that into your answer

They will want to know your motivation for doing the course, how you went about it, if there were any set backs or challenges, how you dealt with them and of course, the end result and how you felt about it.

If you look at the person specification for the job, you will see the skills/behaviours they are after.

Try to include these in your answers where possible.

This is very good advice. I used a very similar answer in my MMI which must have been acceptable because I am now a post qualified driver for freight company. Good luck

Thank you this is all great help. So to clarify am I right in thinking. Good answer would be I have done an OU course in X, module lasted for X months. I had to plan time, use a variety of study materials. At times I liased with tutor about something I was unsure of for example Y. We had a few tutorials which I attended missing out on overtime social events etc had to revise for and do an exam. Result being I passed the module. Not sure about the motivation side just I never went to Uni and I wanted to set myself the challenge of getting the degree and its a subject I find interesting

If you know why the question is asked then you will know how to answer it. The question is asked to ascertain whether you have had to study in a classroom environment for over 2 weeks as this is what you will be doing as a trainee. Open university is okay as an example but doing a classroom based course for over 2 weeks will be a better example.

The last time I was in a classroom like that was when I did my A'levels in the 1990s. I have had short training courses at work but not 2 weeks in a classroom since school.

I have been pondering this and wonder how many people have sat in a classroom for 2 weeks since school or university. Most jobs now include on the job training with the occasional theory based classroom work. Also I was told in my line manger interview that trainees are responsible for managing their own learning now. I would have thought my OU example would fit with this nicely.

I agree that you could use this as an example - as redron pointed out, as long as you structure your answer correctly. I used my time at university as my example - I pointed out my use of time management and organisational skills as well as planning ahead to balance work/uni/home life etc.

It depends on what you have put down for each.

For example, the one about something you have done which is similar to train driving - the only thing I could put was when I used to drive a minibus.

I pointed out that it required a lot of concentration and also me having to ignore distractions/noise from the passengers. It was also sometimes long trips of 2-3 hours drive etc.
