That's what I thought however the ticket inspector between Schwerin and Wismar insisted we show him the live app, not just a screenshot of the big square coded picture!!

I used the Bremen app for my partners ticket. This was easier than HVV in that it accepted UK address and credit card no problem. It was dead easy to cancel too. It is a bit scary "cancelling" a ticket half way through your holiday but to our relief the first ticket remained valid till the end of the month and thus the second month was cancelled. It looks pretty simple to reactivate for your next trip too.
