Queens Road (Peckham)

I seem to recall seeing in Joe Brown's London Rail Atlas that the railway through Queens Road Peckham used to be 3 tracks, but at some point was reduced to 2. The width of the trackbed suggests this is correct, as there appears to be space for a third track along the centre; however, a number of island platforms have been built in the space previously occupied by that track (such as at Queens Road), and (almost) all the overbridges are two single track structures (which look relatively modern). Could someone please avail me of what the history of this bit of line is?

It opened in the mid-1860s, and was 3-track (2 up 1 down, looking at relevant OS maps) from the start. Old Kent Rd station (closed in WW1?) never had a platform on the middle road, unlike the others.

The third track was taken out by the SR when the line was re-electrified on 3rd rail, and the present South Bermondsey station dates from then. Peckham Rye was rebuilt as an island platform in the early 50s, (EDIT: 60s - see down-thread) while Queens Road lasted till the 70s.

Whilst I don’t know, the design of most of the ’replaced’ bridges suggests that what was there before had life expired.

I loved driving this section of track, if you looked over the wall on the up side near the new old Kent road junction. You could see the remnants of an internal railway/ or tramway in the old goods yard beneath.

Yes - it depends on the construction
