Hi,
Don't know if you are aware of these, but maybe they can give you some advice from their end, as it were.

Aurizon in Geraldton WA were taking large amounts of drivers a few years ago, I nearly followed my mate over there. Apparently, all is not as rosy as its made out to be though.

I always come up against the same brick wall when I look. And that’s the fact that train driving isn’t in the skill shortage list so there’s no way to apply.

Keep us updated as to how you get on though.

It doesn't have to be on the skill set list - it wasnt when I got offered a job. Its got around by a special 'sponsored visa', after 2 years (as was) you can apply for permanent residency.

How would you get sponsored though? Every time I send speculative emails to tocs they respond by saying they can’t offer sponsorship and the job isn’t on the shortlist.

Wait for a boom when they can’t recruit within state or countrywide. That’s then they start looking and seek to sponsor you, however in the past couple of years I believe it’s all changed to make it harder to get there if it’s not on the skilled lists....

I'm not sure the introduction of automated trains in WA at some mines is going to help.
