Not necessarily to do with the actual 456 traction but Southern run a two car 456 shuttle between Purley and Tattenham Corner during week days. Will this service be scrapped once the 456s go to SWT in December or will they be replaced by say a three car 377 for example? Does anyone know?

opentraintimes still shows the shuttles operating in the offpeak on 9th December, (and we're now getting closer and closer to the 12 week public timetable deadline), so it's probably unlikely they'll be scrapped.

The shuttles are so so empty half the time and that's a two car, it seems silly putting out a four car for example which will cost more money etc.

Well it would either be run the service with a 4-car or just scrap the service completely.

Apparently the shuttles are on the proposed December diagrams. I just wonder if they will run a 4 car 455 up and down or a 3 car 377. Why is the shuttle in existence anyway? You get regular trains from Purley to Tattenham anyway and from what I have seen financially running the shuttles doesn't seem all that viable.

The shuttle service between Purley and Tattenahm Corner is part of the South Central franchise service commitments, so will run whether it is financially viable or not.

Seems like a strange service to commit to in a contract.

The shuttle was introduced in Dec 2008 as a replacement for the services that used to run from London Bridge - Smitham (now Coulsdon Town). It was the same timetable change that saw the Tattenham Corner trains terminate at London Bridge instead of Charing Cross.

It's pretty handy tbh. I've used it enough times when arriving at Coulsdon Town and heading North.
