Purley fast platforms

Is any train at any time of the week scheduled to stop at platforms 1 / 2 at Purley? If not, are they ever used during disruption etc, or are they completely disused at the moment?

Yes, they are used during weekend engineering work from time to time.

There's a train to Reigate at 07:23 or so (unless the January timetable has taken it out). The gates through to platform 3 are open - don't know when from, or when someone comes around to close them again.

I used to work there albeit 5years ago. They have a few schedule departures from there each week and then most engineering weekends. If Tattenham and Caterham lines are shut its most likely platforms 3-6 are shut

The 6:13 from Redhill (I think originates from Horsham) calls on the fast platform every day. It is often pointless as being only four coaches often leaves passengers behind at both Coulsdon South and Purley.

IIRC the 1947 London Bridge-Reigate service used to use Platform 2, but doesn't usually now.

They can take either the Redhill Mainlines or Quarry Line, except for the staff trains which call at Redhill, which obviously can't use the Quarry unless there's no other option. Timings should accommodate either without too much hassle. Overnight trains can use Platforms 1 & 2 at Purley, but it just depends what's open and when.

As a point of trivia, the other night there was a block on the Down line near Redhill station and a block of the Up Quarry. Therefore most overnight trains ran via Redhill Northbound and the Quarry Southbound. However, because of a block on the Up Main (through line) at Redhill, a tiny number of Northbound trains passed through Redhill Platform 1 non-stop. That's fairly rare, really. Unfortunately I didn't see what was happening as I was only there at 0400.

If there is only one line open between Redhill and Purley Junction (just North of Purley), and the Quarry Line is closed, pilotmen can guide trains between Redhill and East Croydon, meaning they will change at Redhill. This means all services may call at Redhill overnight - it happens a couple of times a year.

As mentioned, the night trains use em, but it can be random, depends on what the signaler needs to do. So one train might, the next wont.

Usually depends on what T3 and line blockages are taking place as to what platforms are used over night at Purley, usually arranged locally between the signaller and the night chargeman at Purley.

They've even been used by Thameslink occassionally (including one special stop added this week to provide a connection).
